Asbestos Level 1 (WorkSafeBC Approved)
Description
This WorkSafeBC Approved Asbestos Level 1 course is designed to provide workers with the knowledge and awareness required to safely work around asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and comply with current British Columbia regulatory requirements.
Participants will gain an understanding of what asbestos is, where it may be found, the health risks associated with exposure, and the safe work practices required when handling or working near asbestoscontaining materials. The course also covers the legal responsibilities of workers, supervisors, and
employers under WorkSafeBC regulations.
This training is intended for workers who transport asbestos-containing materials or dispose of asbestos-containing waste, as well as tradespeople and workers who may encounter asbestos during regular work activities.
The course includes instructor-led theory training, course discussions, regulatory review, and a final assessment to ensure participants understand asbestos hazards, regulatory requirements, and safe work procedures.
Training is available in English, Spanish, Punjabi, and Hindi.
Course Duration
• Total Course Duration: 6 Hours
• Classroom Theory Training: 5 Hours
• Final Assessment and Course Review: 1 Hour

• Definition of asbestos
• Historical uses of asbestos in buildings and industrial materials
• Types of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs)
• Friable vs. non-friable asbestos materials
• Understanding asbestos abatement work
• Hazardous materials surveys and sampling processes
• Air monitoring requirements and procedures
• Routes of asbestos exposure
• Health effects associated with asbestos exposure
• Exposure limits and monitoring
• Exposure Control Plans (ECPs)
• Safe handling and disposal of asbestos-containing waste
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) awareness
Certification
Participants are required to attend and participate in the full course and must successfully complete the final assessment with a minimum passing grade of 80%.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive an official WorkSafeBC Asbestos Level 1 Certificate
valid for three years.
