Medical Gas Piping and Systems Installation Training

Description

Are you a certified Plumber, Steamfitter, or Pipefitter working in healthcare facilities and looking to become a certified Medical Gas Piping Installer?    

This training package will provide participants with all the prerequisites that are required to write the Medical Gas Piping and Systems Installations Certification Exam to become a CSA Certified Medical Gas Piping Installer.

This comprehensive, blended learning, training package will provide plumbers, steamfitters, and pipefitters with the skills needed to install and maintain pipelines for medical gases, medical vacuum, medical support gases, and anesthetic gas scavenging systems.    

This training package includes:   

  • Theory – 32 Hours of virtual classroom theory 
  • Practical Training – 4 Hours of in-person, hands-on training including brazing and purging procedures. 
  • Brazing Exam – A 2-hour in-person Medical Gas Performance Test (Brazed copper joint)  
  • Course Materials– All course materials for the theory, practical hands-on brazing training, and brazing exam will be provided. 

This package does not include the CSA Medical Gas Piping and Systems Installations Certification Exam. Participants will need to apply and pay for this exam separately on CSA’s website: https://www.csagroup.org/store/product/2422072_pc/ . The fee is an additional $345 +GST and is payable to CSA directly.

 

Theory - Online Component 

NAIT - PLMR150 - Fundamentals of Medical Gas Installation 

In partnership with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) the classroom/theory component of this package will be delivered as asynchronous online learning through NAIT’s learning management system. Participants will have four weeks to complete this component.  

This flexible learning option allows participants to complete the training at times that work for their schedule while still having access to an instructor that is available to answer questions and provide live support as requested.    

A minimum grade of 80% is required to pass this component.

Learning Outcomes   

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to   

  • Determine the overall concept of the CSA Z7396.1 Standard and the requirements for installer certification, common trade practices, and protocol for hospital shutdowns. 
  • Determine the correct materials to be used for the installation of medical gas systems. 
  • Determine installation procedures for distribution pipelines systems and terminal units in accordance with the Standard. 
  • Describe the installation and maintenance of master and local alarms. 
  • Describe the installation and maintenance of the supply sources for medical gas systems. 
  • Test piping systems in accordance with the Standard and accompany the testing agency with their testing requirements.   

Resources/Manuals  

Participants will be provided digital non-downloadable access to the CSA Z7396.1-17 Medical Gas Pipeline Systems Standard accessible by NAIT students through the NAIT library. The fee for the manual is an additional $400 + GST and is payable to CSA directly.

 

Practical In-Person Training Component   

KPU  -  Brazing Training  

In partnership with the Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) the hands-on, practical brazing training component of this package will be delivered as in-person, classroom learning at KPU’s Welder Test Center located at 5500 180th Street, Cloverdale, BC.  Participants will receive 4 hours of hands-on, instructor-led practical learning including brazing and purging procedures.   

Learning Outcomes 

  • Safety (PPE, cotton clothing, steel-toed work boots, welding gloves, tinted safety glasses)
  • Safety (equipment, cylinders, hoses, torch, regulator/flowmeter, etc.)
  • Gases (acetylene, nitrogen)
  • Brazing procedure;
    • Material preparation
    • Fit up
    • Type of joints
    • Purging volume
    • Flame settings
    • Heating temperature of the tubing
    • Filler rod classification
    • Brazing positions
    • Welding technique
    • Inspection criteria (visual internal/external and mechanical)

Participants are required to bring the following PPE:

  • Steel-toed boots
  • All cotton clothing (no polyester) 
  • Welding gauntlet gloves
  • Tinted safety goggles
  • If you have long hair, please make sure it is tied back. 

For cohorts of 7 or more, multiple dates will be secured for the practical brazing and exam components.  Participants will complete the practical components and the exam will follow immediately afterward.    

Participants will automatically be sorted into two dates, however, if you have a preference between the dates, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.    

 

Brazing Exam - In-Person Component  

KPU   Brazing Exam

Successful participants will be provided a QB-484 test report issued by KPU.
