Net Zero Energy for New Construction
Introduces concepts and techniques for designing and creating high performance and net zero energy in new construction projects.
Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Built Green Net Zero Energy for New Construction is a partnership between Built Green Canada and Blue House Energy. This course builds on Blue House Energy’s Construction Technology course. It introduces concepts and techniques for designing and creating high performance and net zero energy in new construction projects. In addition to advanced envelope and mechanical system content, the course includes discussion on how occupant behaviour impacts the overall energy use in a house, and affects the sizing of renewable energy systems. At the end of this course, you will be able to:
● Describe the characteristics of net zero energy and high performance new construction
● Provide examples of envelope assemblies and systems that are suitable for net zero energy and high performance housing
● List advanced mechanical systems suitable for net zero energy construction
● Explain the impact of occupant behaviour on energy use and reaching net zero energy targets
● Discuss, at a high level, the properties and features of residential renewable energy systems
OBJECTIVES
Module 1: Strategies and Approaches to High Performance Houses
● Describe the characteristics of a high performance house
● Determine the impact of codes on energy efficiency and housing
● Provide examples of building problems due to poor design and construction
● Describe the benefits of pre-planning and future-proofing
Module 2: Advanced Building Envelope
● Describe key stages in designing and constructing a highly efficient building
● Recognize different types of new construction methods
● Provide examples of high-performance envelope assemblies and systems
● Determine regional and climate zone considerations for assemblies
Module 3: Advanced Mechanical Systems
● List high-performance mechanical systems
● Identify opportunities to integrate mechanical systems
● Describe ‘right sized’ space conditioning systems
● Describe the factors involved in thermal comfort vs. heating/cooling systems
Module 4: Domestic Hot Water
● Describe the purpose of DHW equipment
● Describe the operating principles of DHW
● Identify various types of DHW equipment and ranges of efficiency
● List opportunities to reduce DHW use
Module 5: Occupant Behaviour and Baseloads
● Explain the impact of occupant behaviour on energy use
● List opportunities to reduce total water consumption
● List opportunities to reduce lighting loads
● Describe opportunities to reduce electrical loads
Module 6: Passive Solar Design
● Describe the solar cycle and the impact is has on Northern Hemisphere buildings
● Explain the three main principles of passive solar design
● Describe how to implement passive solar design in buildings
Module 7: Renewable Energy Systems
● Explain the benefits of renewable energy for housing
● Describe general principles of active solar thermal systems
● Describe general principles of on-site generation systems
