Indigenous Cultural Awareness

This online course is designed to provide you with an introduction to the Indigenous peoples of Canada. As Indigenous peoples have a long history before Canada even existed, we cannot address every topic, but this course will spark interest for you to learn more about the many cultures within Canada. This online course covers important topics such as important aspects of their vibrant cultures, life in Canada before colonization, and the impacts of colonization, all from the perspectives of Indigenous peoples.

Overall, this online course is composed of seven chapters. These modules include:

  • Chapter 1: Names and Peoples  
  • Chapter 2: Before Colonization
  • Chapter 3: Meeting of Two Worlds  
  • Chapter 4: Consequences of Colonization
  • Chapter 5: Applying Traditional Knowledge to Current Topics 
  • Chapter 6: Myths and Stereotypes about Indigenous Cultures
  • Chapter 7: Working Together 

Upon completion, you will be presented with a final exam to test your knowledge. 

Course Topics: 

As there are over 600 distinct Indigenous cultures in Canada, we cannot cover all topics in detail but provide a strong foundation of knowledge to start you on your own learning journey! By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand more about the many bright and vibrant Indigenous cultures around you today
  • Imagine what life was like in North America prior to, during, and after the arrival of Europeans
  • Identify the impacts that colonialism had on Indigenous peoples 
  • Understand the importance of storytelling for Indigenous peoples and how this is being used in Canada to solve current issues
  • Identify common myths and stereotypes about Indigenous peoples 
  • Learn more about the benefits of understanding other cultures in the workplace 

Exam:

A mark of 80% must be achieved in order to receive a certificate of completion for this online Introduction to Indigenous Cultures of Canada course. Participants are able to repeat the course twice if the pass mark is not achieved.

Certificate: 

Upon successful completion of this online course, a certificate of completion will be available for download and printing.
