Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
Employers must assess workplace hazards, prioritize risks, and implement controls to eliminate or reduce threats to worker safety.
Description
Occupational injuries and illnesses happen when workers are exposed to hazards in their workplaces. If you eliminate the hazards, or at least prevent workers from being exposed to hazards, then it follows that they will not have work-related injuries and illnesses. If the hazard cannot be eliminated, then the employer must do everything reasonably practical to reduce the level of risk faced by workers to the lowest amount possible. In order to determine if the hazards can be eliminated or the threat to workers reduced, the employer must assess and prioritize the level of risk posed by those hazards, and establish controls based on the level of priority.
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the legislated requirements for conducting risk assessments
- Explain what a hazard is
- Explain what risk is
- Identify the process for identifying hazards and assessing risks
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize risks
- Recognize the hierarchy of control to effectively deal with hazards
- Complete the risk assessment process
Verification of competency will be determined through the completion of knowledge checks and a final quiz.
