Description
In today’s fast-paced construction industry, success isn’t just about skills and experience, it’s also about how well you work with others. Whether you're coordinating with crews on site, managing client expectations, or solving problems with designers and trades, emotional intelligence (EQ) plays a critical role in getting the job done safely, efficiently, and collaboratively. This session will help you recognize and manage your own emotional reactions, especially under pressure, and understand how to better read and respond to others. When you can stay calm in the moment, respond with purpose, and communicate with empathy, even in high-stress situations, you improve team trust, reduce conflict, and deliver better outcomes on the job.
Learning Objectives
· Recognize what triggers your stress, frustration, or shutdown responses on the job
· React more intentionally to emotional situations, whether dealing with a heated trade partner or a frustrated client
· Increase your awareness of how others on your team may be thinking and feeling, even when they don’t say it directly
· Build trust and credibility by communicating with empathy, not just authority
· Stay grounded and make better decisions, even when under pressure or dealing with unexpected changes
Course Content
· Define emotional intelligence in the context of construction teamwork, safety, and communication
· Understand how EQ is different from technical knowledge or IQ—and why both matter on the job
· Identify the behaviours that build strong relationships with forepersons, trades, head office, and clients
· Reflect on your personal EQ strengths and what might get in your way during conflict or high-stakes situations
· Practice using a communication model to express your point of view clearly and respectfully—even when others disagree
· Learn to “read the room” to better understand what co-workers, clients, or team members may be feeling
· Develop techniques to stay calm, think clearly, and make smart decisions—especially when time and pressure are high
