Recognizing the Influence of Hidden Bias in the Workplace

This session explores the impact of hidden biases and stereotypes in the workplace, offering strategies to recognize and reduce their influence. Learn how to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment through actionable techniques.

Description

We may not realize it, but we have been “programmed” by images on television, in movies and magazines, and on social media. Over time, this results in groups of people being labeled with a characteristic that can’t possibly fit all group members. Our past experiences, culture, and background also have an impact. In this session, we will explore stereotypes and biases and learn strategies to avoid discriminatory behavior.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand what unconscious bias is and how it manifests in the workplace
  • Learn how culture and experience impact your communication styles and behaviors
  • Understand how biases are formed
  • Build awareness of common stereotypes and unconscious biases that affect decision-making
  • Learn strategies and techniques to recognize and mitigate unconscious bias in personal interactions and organizational processes.

Course Content

  • Define unconscious bias and why it matters
  • Recognize the various forms of unconscious bias that influence behaviors and decisions
  • Explore the impact of stereotypes on how we view and behave toward others
  • Explore how biases and stereotypes show up in hiring, promotions, performance reviews, and everyday interactions, using real-life scenarios and examples
  • Understand the long-term effects of unconscious bias on employee engagement, diversity and inclusion efforts, and organizational performance
  • Learn actionable strategies for reducing the influence of unconscious bias in decision-making and interactions
