Building Better Crews: Calling Out Bias
Tackling Bias to Strengthen Teams and Sharpen Jobsite Decisions
Description
In the construction world, teamwork, trust, and clear communication are essential for getting the job done right and safely. But sometimes, without even realizing it, we bring hidden assumptions—called unconscious bias—to the job site. These automatic judgments can affect how we hire, assign tasks, promote, or treat crew members. When left unchecked, bias can hurt morale, divide teams, and even lead to safety or legal risks.
This hands-on workshop dives into the most common types of bias found on worksites—like assumptions about someone’s background, trade, gender, age, or ability. We’ll offer straight-up tools and real-world strategies for forepersons, crew leads, and workers to recognize and interrupt these patterns before they impact jobsite decisions or relationships.
